  7. Artwork created using FRACBlank, ImageStudio,
  8. Image Engineer3.41 and, in some cases, pre-
  9. existing photography. To the best of my know-
  10. ledge, any pre-existing photography used is
  11. freely distributable and royalty-free.

  13. This artwork shows what can be done on the
  14. Amiga Classic without spending your life
  15. savings in the process. Every software package
  16. used for these pictures is shareware or other-
  17. wise freely distributable software.

  21. PIRATE. 
  22.  
  23. 1. A person who reproduces copyright material without permission.
  24.    Usually by hacking away any copy protection. The cracker.
  25.  
  26. 2. A person who distributes the crackers illegal work.
  27.  
  28. 3. A person who infringes another's copyright or other business
  29.    rights by using the crackers illegal work. The user.
  30.  
  31. Now let us look at these in a little detail.
  32.  
  33. 1. This person is altering the copyrighted material and ending up
  34.    with a program based on the authors original code, but not the 
  35.    authors work. This person has therefore infringed the authors 
  36.    copyrights.  The process of removing any copy protection, esp. for 
  37.    internet software usually ends up with the hacker placing backdoors 
  38.    into the program that he or his pirate group may access the users 
  39.    computer at will. This enables the cracker or pirate group to access
  40.    new software that they can crack by taking it directly off another 
  41.    users computer.  If this program was serial numbered or had a keyfile
  42.    then it will appear that the user has given away their registered 
  43.    software freely to the pirates.

  45. 2. This person is the worst of the three. He is making available
  46.    the pirated software for any other person to use. The "wares" site
  47.    will usually be part of a pirate groups setup and monitored.  This
  48.    way any person that accesses this site is logged and the pirates will 
  49.    usually take as many other people down as possible if they are caught.

  51. 3. The person who accepts and uses the cracked software. usually, without
  52.    their knowledge, also providing the pirates with new products to crack.
  53.    If the user stopped using the pirated software, a few things are likely 
  54.    to happen;

  56.    a, The crackers cannot access any new products to crack as they will
  57.       not have any hacked programs on the users computer to access his /
  58.       her machine.
  59.  
  60.    b, The authors of legal software will sell hundreds of new copies that
  61.       would otherwise not have been bought.  This will encourage them to 
  62.       produce better products as they will no longer need to spend as much 
  63.       time improving their copy protection.
  64.  
  65.    c, The crackers will get bored and may direct their talents to writing 
  66.       new software themselves.  Again this will benefit everyone.

  68.    d, The distributer will no longer have anything to distribute.  Where 
  69.       there is no demand, there is no supply.

  71.    e, The Amiga will move away from the image of being a platform for cheep
  72.       pirated games.

  74.    f, The user will feel better in him / her self that they are using legal
  75.       software and therefore helping the Amiga market and not helping to kill
  76.       it as they are now.
